September 1, 2016
To highlight our desire to live in the spirit of Laudato Si’ as a school community, Ave Maria Academy gladly takes up Pope Francis’ designation of September 1st as the first annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. On campus, we will initiate our day with St. Francis’ Canticle to Creation (Brother Sun and Sister Moon), and we will name as a special intention “that we may come to care for creation as God’s good stewards” in our day’s end Rosary. Please join us in intention and in deed by making a commitment to renew our holy responsibility over the earth in good will. From Genesis and the earliest moments of mankind, God gave us, His special co-creators, dominion over all creation, not simply to bend to our own will or waste in mere pleasure but to nurture and draw from it each aspect of its inherent and divinely designed beauty and good uses.
In a practical way and related to this focus on the care of creation, Ave Maria Academy needs volunteers to move raised garden beds from a residence nearby to campus. Desired are trucks, wheelbarrows, shovels, pitchforks, and able bodies. This project will be undertaken soon and details will be announced. Please let Mr. Verlander or Mrs. Davis know if you can help.
For His glory, let us remember to take meaningful steps in prayer and practice to heed God’s providential call to us to be caregivers to and stewards of the earth. Provided here are a couple of good prayers for meditation and inspiration, a link to Ave Maria Academy’s Laudato Si’ Plan, as well as a Vatican Radio link to the Pope’s announcement:
A Prayer for our Earth by Pope Francis (from Laudato Si): All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.
Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon by St. Francis of Assisi: Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord, All praise is Yours, all glory, all honour and all blessings. To you alone, Most High, do they belong, and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name. Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, Who is the day through whom You give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour, Of You Most High, he bears the likeness. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, And fair and stormy, all weather’s moods, by which You cherish all that You have made. Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water, So useful, humble, precious and pure. Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire, through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You my Lord through our Sister, Mother Earth who sustains and governs us, producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs. Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial. Blessed are those who endure in peace, By You Most High, they will be crowned. Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death, from whom no-one living can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will. No second death can do them harm. Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks, And serve Him with great humility.
